Recording a Zoom meeting sounds simple until you actually try it. Hosts have straightforward options, but participants hit a wall: Zoom's built-in recorder is gated behind host permission. And when you're using Zoom in the browser — not the desktop app — built-in recording doesn't work at all.
This guide covers every method for recording Zoom meetings, including what works without the app, what works without host permission, and how to get the best quality either way.

Record Any Zoom Meeting Without Host Permission
Screen Recorder Pro captures your entire browser tab — including audio — without needing Zoom's built-in recording feature. Works for hosts, participants, and webinar attendees.
Add to Chrome — FreeMethod 1: Zoom's Built-In Recording (Hosts and Permitted Participants)
The simplest option when you have access to it. Zoom's native recording captures all video streams, audio, screen shares, and chat — all synchronized into a single MP4.
Starting a Recording as Host
During a live meeting, find the recording button
In the Zoom app, look for the Record button in the bottom toolbar. Click the dropdown arrow next to it to choose between local or cloud recording.
Choose recording location
Record on this computer saves locally as MP4 (free on all plans). Record to the cloud saves to Zoom's servers (paid plans only, up to storage limits).
A recording indicator appears for all participants
A red dot and "Recording" text appear in the top-left corner of every participant's screen. This is mandatory and cannot be disabled.
Stop and process
Click Stop Recording or press Alt+R again. When the meeting ends, Zoom converts the recording. For long meetings, this conversion can take several minutes.
Granting Recording Permission to a Participant
As host, you can allow a participant to record:
- Open the Participants panel
- Hover over the participant's name
- Click More and select Allow to Record
- The participant can now start local recording from their Zoom app
Method 2: Chrome Extension Recording (No Permission Required)
When you run Zoom through the browser (zoom.us/wc/join), or when you don't have recording permission, a Chrome extension captures exactly what's on your screen including all audio from the meeting tab.
This method works regardless of your Zoom role and doesn't trigger Zoom's built-in recording indicator. You're simply recording your own screen — the same as pointing a camera at your monitor, legally speaking.
Install Screen Recorder Pro from the Chrome Web Store
Takes about 10 seconds. No account required, no separate app download.
Open your Zoom meeting in Chrome
Use the web client at zoom.us, or join from an invite link that opens in the browser.
Click the Screen Recorder Pro icon and start recording
Select Tab to record just the Zoom meeting, or Desktop to capture everything. Enable microphone if you want to capture your own voice as well.
Stop and download
When the meeting ends, stop the recording. The file downloads to your default downloads folder automatically.
Works for Browser-Based Zoom Too
Zoom's web client disables built-in recording. Screen Recorder Pro fills the gap — capture any Zoom session regardless of plan or permissions.
Install Screen Recorder ProMethod 3: OS-Level Screen Recording
Both Windows and Mac include built-in screen recorders that work independently of Zoom and any browser extension.
Windows: Xbox Game Bar
Press Win+G to open Game Bar, then click the Record button or press Win+Alt+R to start/stop recording. Saves as MP4 to your Videos\Captures folder. Note: Game Bar requires a "game window" to be active — Zoom's app window works, but browsers may not.
Mac: Screenshot App
Press Shift+Cmd+5 to open the screenshot toolbar. Click Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion. Click Stop in the menu bar when done. Saves as MOV to your Desktop.
Chromebook: Built-In Screen Capture
Press Shift+Ctrl+Show Windows (the rectangle with lines key). Select the screen recording option. Works well for Zoom Web Client recordings on Chromebook.
Comparing All Three Methods
| Method | Works for Participants | Audio Captured | Quality | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zoom Built-In | Only with host permission | All participants | Very high (optimized) | One click |
| Chrome Extension | Yes, always | Tab audio + microphone | High (browser-limited) | One click |
| OS Screen Recorder | Yes, always | System audio (varies) | High | Keyboard shortcut |
Getting Good Audio When Recording Zoom
Video quality is rarely the problem — audio is. Here's how to get clean audio from each approach:
- Zoom built-in: Audio is automatically captured from all participants. The recording sounds exactly like the meeting.
- Chrome extension: Enable both "Tab Audio" (for Zoom's audio output) and "Microphone" in the extension settings. This captures both sides of the conversation.
- OS recorder: On Windows, enable "Stereo Mix" in Sound settings to capture system audio. On Mac, you may need an app like BlackHole to route audio for recording.
Legal Considerations: Recording Zoom Meetings
Recording calls without consent is illegal in some jurisdictions, regardless of the technical method used. Key points to know:
- One-party consent states/countries: You can record a conversation you're part of without notifying others. This covers most US states, UK, and Australia.
- Two-party (all-party) consent states: All participants must consent before recording. This includes California, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and several others.
- Zoom's consent notification: When using Zoom's built-in recording, participants are notified. This satisfies consent in many jurisdictions.
- Third-party recording: If you record without Zoom's notification appearing, you're responsible for obtaining consent through other means (verbal, written, etc.).
When in doubt, announce at the start: "I'll be recording this meeting for my personal reference." This covers you legally in virtually all jurisdictions.
Finding Your Recordings After the Meeting
Different methods save files in different places:
- Zoom local recordings: Documents\Zoom on Windows, ~/Documents/Zoom on Mac. Each meeting gets a subfolder with the date and meeting name.
- Zoom cloud recordings: Log into zoom.us → Recordings → Cloud Recordings. Links expire after a set period unless downloaded.
- Chrome extension: Your browser's default Downloads folder.
- Xbox Game Bar: Videos\Captures on Windows.
- Mac Screenshot App: Desktop (by default).
Never Miss a Meeting Again
Screen Recorder Pro makes it easy to capture any Zoom call, lecture, webinar, or online meeting — directly from your browser, no Zoom app required.

Can I record a Zoom meeting without the host knowing?
Zoom's built-in recording always notifies all participants with an on-screen indicator. If you use a third-party screen recorder or browser extension to capture the meeting tab, that notification does not appear, though you should still obtain consent from all participants as required by applicable laws.
Does Zoom save recordings locally or in the cloud?
Zoom offers both. Local recordings save MP4 files directly to your computer (available on all plans). Cloud recording saves to Zoom's servers and is only available on paid plans. You choose which option in Zoom's recording settings before or during the meeting.
What format does Zoom save recordings in?
Zoom saves local recordings as MP4 video files with an M4A audio file and a VTT caption file in the same folder. Cloud recordings are also MP4 but stored on Zoom's servers and accessible via a shareable link.
Can a participant start recording in Zoom?
Participants can only record if the host explicitly grants recording permission. In the Participants panel, the host right-clicks a participant's name and selects 'Allow Record'. Without that permission, participants cannot use Zoom's built-in recording. They can, however, use a separate screen recorder.
Why is my Zoom recording blurry or low quality?
Zoom adjusts video quality dynamically based on your internet connection. For local recordings, set "improve for 3rd party video editor" in recording settings and ensure your CPU isn't under load during the meeting. For cloud recordings, quality is set server-side and is typically 720p.
Can I record Zoom in a browser (no app)?
Yes. Zoom Web Client runs in your browser at zoom.us/wc/join. When using the web client, Zoom's built-in recording is unavailable, but you can use a Chrome screen recording extension to capture the full browser tab including audio from the meeting.
