Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Screen Recorder Pro

Getting Started

How do I start recording?

Click the Screen Recorder Pro icon in your browser toolbar, choose your recording source (Screen, Tab, or Camera), select your audio options, and click "Start Recording". For screen recording, you'll be prompted to select which screen or window to share.

Why can't I find the extension icon?

After installing, click the puzzle piece icon in Chrome's toolbar, find Screen Recorder Pro, and click the pin icon to add it to your toolbar for easy access.

What's the difference between Screen, Tab, and Camera recording?

  • Screen - Records your entire desktop or a specific window. Best for tutorials and software demos.
  • Tab - Records only the current browser tab with its audio. Perfect for capturing online videos or meetings.
  • Camera - Records from your webcam. Ideal for video messages or vlogs.

Recording Issues

Why do I see "No screen selected" error?

When you click "Start Recording" with Screen mode selected, Chrome shows a dialog asking you to choose what to share. You need to select a screen, window, or tab from this dialog and click "Share". If you close this dialog without selecting anything, you'll see this error.

Why isn't my microphone being recorded?

Make sure the "Microphone" checkbox is enabled before starting your recording. If it's your first time, Chrome may ask for microphone permission - click "Allow" to grant access. Check your system settings to ensure your microphone is working and not muted.

Why is there no audio in my tab recording?

Tab audio only works when there's actually audio playing in the tab. Make sure the video or audio you want to capture is playing and not muted. Some websites may block audio capture for DRM-protected content.

My recording stopped unexpectedly. What happened?

Recordings may stop if you close the tab being recorded, if the browser runs low on memory, or if the screen share permission is revoked. The extension includes autosave protection, so partial recordings should still be recoverable.

Files & Format

What format are recordings saved in?

Recordings are saved in WebM format, which is widely supported by modern browsers and video players. WebM offers excellent quality at small file sizes.

Where are my recordings saved?

When you stop recording, you'll be prompted to choose where to save the file. By default, it goes to your Downloads folder with a filename like "recording-2025-01-15T10-30-45.webm".

Can I convert recordings to MP4?

The free version saves in WebM format. MP4 and GIF export options are available in the Pro version. You can also use free online converters to convert WebM files to MP4.

Privacy & Security

Are my recordings uploaded anywhere?

No. All recordings are processed entirely on your computer. Nothing is ever uploaded to our servers or any third party. Your recordings stay completely private.

Why does the extension need these permissions?

Each permission is required for core functionality:

  • desktopCapture - Required to record your screen
  • tabCapture - Required to record browser tabs
  • storage - Saves your preferences locally
  • downloads - Allows saving recordings to your computer

Is Screen Recorder Pro really free?

Yes! Basic recording with tab capture, webcam, microphone audio, and WebM export is completely free with no watermarks or time limits.
